MONTHLY HIGHLIGHTS

National Handwashing Awareness Week
National Handwashing Awareness Week is December 2nd-8th, 2007. National Handwashing Awareness Week is the first full week in December each year. Handwashing is the single most important act one can do to prevent the spread and acquiring colds, flu and flu-like illnesses. The CDC estimates that 36,000 people die annually from the flu and flu-like illness, 5,000 people die from food borne illnesses annually, and as many as 90,000 patients die each year from hospital acquired infections. Many of these deaths are directly linked to poor handwashing. In addition to the 2 million patients who contract hospital acquired infections, the 70 million food borne illnesses and the countless colds that occur annually.

Water Exercise Program For Those With Arthritis

The National Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program, a water exercise class for those with arthritis will start on September 14, 2007. This is an opportunity for people with arthritis to gain flexibility, strength and stamina, meet others and have fun. The goal is to improve circulation, endurance and range of motion in joints. Classes are held in shallow water, and you do not have to be a swimmer to participate. This is a great basic level class for anyone wanting to increase their physical activity level.

The hour-long program meets twice a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:00 a.m. at the Comfort Inn pool on Searsport Avenue in Belfast. The fee is $5 per class, $3 for Comfort Inn Pool Members. A class schedule will be available at the class; plans are to continue the program through May 23, 2008.

The instructor is Amy Wagner, Community Health Improvement Coordinator of The Healthy Living Project at Waldo County General Hospital, Certified National Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Exercise Instructor.

Registration is not required, just drop in at any of the scheduled times. If you have any questions, or would like a copy of the class schedule please call Amy Wagner at 930-2650 or e-mail: hlp@wcgh.org.

Smoke-free Housing
The Partnership for a Tobacco-Free Maine and the Healthy Maine Partnerships offers a web site for landlords and property mangers, www.smokefreeforme.org. The website is a great resource to help landlords and managers to designate smoke-free units and areas of their properties. In recent Maine public housing surveys 78% of tenants stated they would choose to live in a smoke-free complex. Landlords and mangers can legally establish a smoke-free policy since people who smoke are not a protected group under Maine's anti-discrimination laws.
